Four lucky football fans were hoisted 50 metres into the air by a crane to enjoy watching Salford City play against Chesterfield FC, all while sipping on their favorite beverages. The event took place on October 12, 2025, and was organized by Fireball Whisky as a unique way to give supporters a chance to legally drink alcohol while watching the game. This unconventional fan experience was a response to the long-standing ban on consuming alcohol in sight of the pitch, which has been in place since 1985.
The ban, which falls under the Sporting Events (Control of Alcohol) Act, has been a point of contention among fans who argue that it is outdated and restrictive. A survey of 2,000 football fans revealed that half of those polled believe it is time to lift the ban on terrace drinking. Many fans find the rule flawed, inconvenient, and even disruptive, leading to excessive pre-game drinking as they are unable to drink at their seats. With 71% of fans admitting to having a drink while attending or watching a match, it is clear that enjoying a beverage is an important part of the football matchday experience for many supporters.
Social creators Tom Garratt and Tom Nestor, known for seeking out football’s most exciting experiences, also took part in the sky-high fan zone event. They joined the lucky fans in the crane, embracing the rebellious and inclusive spirit of the occasion. Garratt emphasized the importance of fans feeling like they are part of something bigger than just watching a game, while Nestor highlighted the need for football to be about enjoyment, celebration, and making lasting memories. The event served as a reminder that the matchday experience should be about freedom, fun, and connection, rather than strict regulations.
