Former England bowler Chris Woakes reckons Ben Stokes’ team “have a hell of a chance” of clinching the Ashes in Australia for the first time since 2010-11 this winter. Woakes, who recently retired from international cricket due to a shoulder injury suffered in his final Test against India, believes that the current squad has what it takes to come out on top in the upcoming series. Despite being part of two unsuccessful Ashes tours in the past, Woakes is optimistic about England’s prospects this time around.

“We have a great squad and some solid depth in the team,” Woakes told BBC Radio 5 Live. “If the guys can stay fit and on the field, we stand a really good chance. Ashes cricket is a different ball game, but these players have the experience and know what to expect. We’ve been building momentum over the years and it’s about time we deliver in a big series like this. The competition down under is tough, but I believe these guys have what it takes to compete.” Woakes had to end his career prematurely after his injury ruled him out of the Ashes tour, but he remains confident that he would have been selected if not for the setback. Despite the challenges, he is focused on making a comeback in franchise cricket by the end of the year.

“Not really sure why this matters, but from the moment I got injured, it was going to be a real struggle to get fit in time for the Ashes squad selection,” Woakes explained. “It was pretty clear that I wouldn’t make it for the tour. In my opinion, I would have made the squad if I hadn’t been injured. I still have a lot to offer and having players with experience in Australia is always beneficial. Physically, I’m feeling great apart from the shoulder incident, which is healing well and getting stronger. I’ve been making good progress lately and hopefully, I’ll be back on the field playing some franchise cricket by December.”

With Woakes’ insights and optimism, England fans can look forward to an exciting and competitive Ashes series this winter. The team’s depth, experience, and determination could be the winning formula needed to conquer the challenges of playing in Australia. As the countdown to the Ashes begins, all eyes will be on how the England squad performs under pressure and whether they can bring home the coveted urn.
