Back in the 1970s, Pripyat was a bustling city established to support the nearby Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. FC Stroitel Pripyat, a fourth-tier team, called the Avanhard Stadium their home ground, proudly sporting black and green jerseys as they battled on the pitch. The club saw success, clinching the Kyiv Oblast Football Championship three years consecutively from 1981 to 1983.
However, tragedy struck on April 26, 1986, when a reactor at the nuclear power plant exploded, causing widespread devastation in Pripyat and Chernobyl. The blast, only an 11-minute drive from the stadium, forced the evacuation of everyone within an 18-mile radius due to dangerous levels of radiation. FC Stroitel Pripyat’s dreams were shattered as they never got to finish the 1986 season, ultimately leading to the club’s rebranding and subsequent shelving in 1988.
